Common Sense Treatment for Corns
Buy shoes that fit your feet properly and you will see immediate improvement. I’m amazed at how self conscious we can be of our images that we go as far as wearing shoes that cause us pain from corns. Improper foot wear is the leading cause to corns. Some tips for buying shoes that will prevent corns are the following:
- While trying on shoes wear the normals style of sock that you will wear with the shoe. Not the cheap panty hose liners they have if you’re not wearing socks. This will help with a better fit.
- If your toes feel squished and are rubbing up against the sides of the shoes, guess what, you’re going to form corns.
- If you’re like me and have two different sized feet you’re best off to purchase the appropriate size shoe for the larger foot and purchase an extra insole to take up some of the extra space for your smaller foot.
- Sandals are perfect! In the warm season give your feet a break and wear some sandals.
Use some padding like cotton balls or lambs wool on your corn when you must wear shoes. Corns form due to friction. Applying a piece of a cotton ball or lambs wool over your corn will help lower the amount of friction helping remove the corn. Why do some doctors suggest lambs wool over cotton balls? Corn pads can help relieve discomfort. You can find corn pads at your local pharmacy. Basically they are a band-aid with some cushion. They look like a horseshoe or a donut with a hole in the middle for your corn to rest in. Make sure to buy large enough corn pads so that your not putting any pressure on the corn. Stay away from the medicated corn pads as they can lead to an infection of the dermis under the corn. You don’t want to risk losing any of your little piggies.
Treat yourself to a foot bath and a pumice stone. Soak your feet for 15 minutes a day in some warm water and gently work away some of the dead skin with a wash cloth or pumice stone. Essentially anything a braise will work including your thumb. Never over scrub your corn as it could lead to further discomfort or infection. It will take a few days to clear up your corns so be patient.
Keep your feet moisturized with a daily foot cream or some classic foot lotion. Make sure to allow the lotion to completely dry before putting on your shoes or you may end up with some other foot problems. Keeping your feet and corns moisturized will make it easier to remove the callouses.
Corn Medications and Removal Options
I would stay away from all medications when it comes to corn removal. From personal experience a corn infestation can be cured simply by following the tips above. Also remember that the medications may lead to further irritation or infection so if your going to use a corn pad buy non-medicated pads.
In extreme situations you always have the option of having corns surgically removed. Follow all of your doctors recommendations as well as take an antibiotic to prevent infection.Remember this is a temporary solution and your corns will just come back if you don’t change your behavior.
